In the picture above, the SoftTiles 2x2 Interlocking foam mats in this home gym/workout room has been in use for a couple of years.  The foam mats are placed directly on the wood floor and connected without taping them or gluing them to the floor. The heavy equipment on the sides will leave permanent indentations in the mats.  To prevent this problem for items that are moved around, an extra couple of mats are placed under movable pieces of equipment like the exercise bike.

Note the use of borders to provide a smooth transition from the mat to the wood floor.
